Multiple Iowa, ISU athletes charged in sports wagering investigation

The Story County Attorney’s Office has filed a criminal complaint against Iowa State University quarterback Hunter Dekkers, charging him with tampering with records. The charges are tied to an investigation into allegations of sports wagering made against student-athletes from both the University of Iowa and Iowa State University.Dekkers is accused of gambling on 26 Iowa State sporting events, including a 2021 football game against Oklahoma State. He was a backup quarterback at the time, according to the complaint. He was also under 21, meaning he was not legally allowed to gamble.Court documents say Dekkers placed more than 300 bets on a DraftKings account, which totaled more than $2,700.The complaint also alleges that Dekkers engaged in the scheme with his parents, Scott and Jami Dekkers. About 12 of those bets were placed on Iowa State games, including games against Ohio, West Virginia, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech.A criminal complaint filed against Uwazurike claims he made about 801 online bets totaling over $21,300. Four wagers were placed on Iowa State games. He also placed about 32 online bets on Denver Broncos games. Uwazurike had been drafted to the Broncos at that time. He has been suspended from the team.According to another criminal complaint, Johnson made about 1,283 online bets that totaled over $45,600. About 25 of those bets were placed on Iowa State University sporting events.A criminal complaint was also filed against former Iowa baseball player Gehrig Christensen. The Des Moines native is accused of using a DraftKings account for approximately 559 sports bets totaling over $2,400, with 23 bets placed on Iowa sporting events. Christensen also engaged in the scheme with his mother, Jill Mingles, to disguise his identity in order to create the appearance that sports bets placed by Christensen were made by Mingles. Both Mingles and Christensen were interviewed by the DCI and admitted to the accused actions.
