China Doesn’t Benefit From US Political Partisanship

Former US president Donald Trump may be indicted again any day now, this time in Georgia. Republicans in Congress are gearing up for another possible government shutdown this fall, perhaps even an attempt to impeach President Joe Biden. With the first GOP debate scheduled for later this month, the 2024 campaign is about to get underway in earnest, pouring fuel on the partisan flames already raging in the US.

Chinese Communist leaders appear to delight in the spectacle, as they see it, of democracy run amok. They view US political polarization as yet another sign of America’s inevitable decline. However real those divisions may be, though, China isn’t likely to benefit from them.
