In contrast to the observations of Jonathan Derbyshire (“A new Catholic counter-revolution is under way”, Opinion, August 8), the recent World Youth Day, where hundreds of thousands of young Catholics from around the world converged on the Portuguese capital Lisbon, was an eminently religious occasion with none of the political significance that he ascribes to it.
For Catholics come in all hues. That is how it was always meant to be. So long as we follow the moral guidelines of the Church and that of our informed conscience, we are at liberty to follow our personal political choices.
As our Catholicism does not imply any particular option, we should not be linked with any political movement, Christian Democrat or otherwise.
