Roundup: Big Reds blank Red Dragons, 56-0 | News, Sports, Jobs

ST. ALBANS — Parkersburg exploded for 35 points in the opening quarter here Friday night and the visiting Big Reds rolled to a 56-0 Mountain State Athletic Conference victory here Friday night against St. Albans.

The Red Dragons, who amassed just 82 total yards, watched signal-caller Reece Lilly get intercepted three times. When Eli Bauman had a 17-yard pick-six at 4:21 of the first, it was 28-0 at that point.

Casey Stanley opened the season scoring for the Big Reds when he caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from David Parsons just 1:47 in. Stanley, who converted all seven of his extra points with Connor Gribble booting the last one, made it 14-0 when Parsons found him with a 24-yard TD strike.

Prior to Bauman’s interception return, Jakel Shelton broke loose for a 44-yard gallop to paydirt. Parsons, who went 7 of 9 for 107 yards, capped the quarter scoring with a 19-yard touchdown pass to Matthew Stalnaker.

Shelton’s 1-yard plunge opened the scoring in the second. Parsons followed with a 10-yard touchdown toss to Andrew Stalnaker. With 36 ticks left in the half, PHS scored the final points of the affair thanks to a Preston Riffle 56-yard pick-6.

Shelton led the PHS rushing attack with 59 yards on six totes.

Wirt County 39, South Harrison 6

LOST CREEK — Chase Lowe rushed 11 times for 151 yards and a trio of touchdowns here Friday night for visiting Wirt County as the Tigers turned a 27-6 halftime cushion into a 39-6 victory versus South Harrison.

Lowe found paydirt early in the first and early in the second from 5 and 15 yards out, respectively. The Tigers, who play host next Friday to Magnolia, led 14-0 as both of Evan McClung’s extra points were true.

Tyler Smith hooked up with Isaiah Sampson on a 38-yard touchdown strike to push the lead to 20-0 with 6:05 to go in the second, but the Hawks finally got on the scoreboard with 31 ticks remaining in the half when Luke Hefner scored from the 8. However, Smith found Brody Ewing for a 49-yard TD connection with one second left to give the orange and black a 27-6 intermission advantage.

Channing Lowe, who toted 10 times for 68 stripes, added a 1-yard TD burst in the third. Lowe tacked on his final six-pointer via a 12-yard jaunt in the fourth.

Smith finished 7 of 10 for 186 yards in his first start. Ewing (2-75), Sampson (3-49) and Porter Goodwin (2-62) accounted for all the receptions.

Eastern 40, Bishop Rosecrans 7

REEDSVILLE, Ohio — Eastern racked up more than 300 yards on the ground and didn’t take long to lock up its second win to start the season after defeating Bishop Rosecrans, 40-7, on Friday night.

Riley Barrett rushed for two touchdowns and Cooper Barnett added a third first-half rushing touchdown while thrlowing for another as the Eagles built a 34-0 halftime lead.

Barrett finished with 133 yards on the ground and backfield mate Gavan Smith added another 101 yards on 10 carries.

Eastern’s first road test occurs next Friday at South Gallia.

“Guys had to fill in tonight — they stepped up and did a beautiful job,” Eastern coach Jason Jackson said.

Miller 44, Frontier 12

NEW MATAMORAS — Miller quarterback Logan Doughty was a handful for host Frontier here Friday night.

By the first minute into the second quarter, Doughty had already rushed for three touchdowns. Miller scored the first 31 points of the game and handed Frontier its second loss to open the season after securing a 44-12 victory.

Doughty finished with 114 yards on the ground, while teammate Zander Bice added 108 yards on 12 attempts. Miller accounted for 310 rushing yards, while Frontier managed just 76 yards.

Frontier running back Ethan Snyder threw for one touchdown and ran for another. The senior finished with 76 yards on 18 rushes.

Brooke 48, Ripley 0

WELLSBURG — It was all Bruins Friday night in their season opener versus Ripley. Brooke quarterback Braelyn Sperringer threw for three touchdowns on the night, two of which came in the first quarter. After the half, Brooke quickly ran back a kickoff return for a touchdown, bringing the score to 34-0 after the extra point.

Sperringer went on to go 6 of 16 for 152 yards. His favorite receiver of the night, Grant Hastings, caught two of those six for 68 yards. Hastings also had nine attempts for 47 yards on the ground.

Ripley was left unable to respond throughout the night, amassing just 69 yards of total offense. Quarterback Tyson Pitt went 5 of 13 for 4 yards and one interception. Their defense, however, did put together a few nice plays. Bradley Anderson had one sack. Noah Casto had both a forced fumble and a recovery. Aydin Domico also pitched in with a fumble recovery.

Tyler Consolidated 42, Ritchie County 6

ELLENBORO — The Knights of Tyler dominated their opener against Ritchie County from start to finish. Brady Strode started off the scoring with a 14 yard rush into the endzone. The Rebels responded with their only score of the game off of a 12 yard run by Jonah Hamilton, making it 7-6 after their failed conversion attempt. Tyler solidified their lead with two passes from Strode of 31 and 19 yards that were caught by Bo Tallman and Tristen Tuttle respectively. This brought the score to 21-6 at the end of the first quarter.

Both teams were held scoreless in the second and third quarters. The Knights extended their lead with three rushing touchdowns in the fourth to make it 42-6. Sean Winfrey, who had the first two of the three rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter, had 28 carries on the night for 242 yards. Jonah Hamilton went for 91 yards on 15 carries.

Strode went 7-15 with two passing touchdowns and one rushing. Branson Winfrey had two catches for 39 yards. The Knights ended up with 467 yards of total offense compared to the Rebel’s 176.
