Responding to Gillian Keegan’s statement on unsafe concrete in schools, the shadow education secretary says the government’s response to the crisis is an “utter shambles”.
After 13 years of Tory government, Bridget Phillipson tells MPs in the Commons, “the public realm is literally crumbling”.
She says: “This week, as the school year begins, there is an awful lot of responsibility for ministers to take. What an utter shambles.
“The defining image of 13 years of Conservative government – children under steel props to stop the ceiling falling in on their heads.”
She doesn’t directly refer to the camera clip that emerged earlier in which Ms Keegan says she’s been doing a good job and it’s “everyone else” who’s been sitting around.
But she asks Ms Keegan who she thinks should be responsible for handling this crisis, having “refused” to accept any herself.
The education secretary will face questions from Sophy Ridge on Sky News during her new show from 7.00pm.
Watch Politics Hub with Sophy Ridge from 7pm Monday to Thursday on Sky channel 501, Virgin channel 602, Freeview channel 233, on the Sky News website and app or on YouTube.
