Chris Christie says he believes Trump would use DOJ against political enemies | News

Date:

Former Republican New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie says he believes that if elected again, former President Donald Trump would use the Department of Justice to go after political enemies.

Christie was asked on CNN This Morning about Trump’s comments at a rally where he entertained the idea of having the Department of Justice, if elected, indict a political challenger to him. Trump has accused President Joe Biden of doing that. The former New Jersey governor said he believes while Trump may not have been serious at the rally, the former president would punish his political rivals with the DOJ.

“Do I think Donald Trump would try to use the Department of Justice and a compliant attorney general to punish his political enemies? Sure I do. So I think they are both true. He was kidding about the context of what he was talking about in terms of someone’s running against him. He is trying to make a point where with what he is alleging Joe Biden is doing, but you know Donald Trump,” Christie said.

“Would Donald Trump use a compliant attorney general to go after his political enemies? Of course he would,” he continued.

Christie made his prediction based on Trump’s “conduct” following the 2020 presidential election.

“And we saw that he tried to use the Justice Department to overturn the election and wanted to put Jeffrey Clark in charge of so that he would. So I don’t think given what his conduct — forget about what he said in that rally — given what his conduct was in the aftermath of the election, it’s not only plausible but likely,” Christie said.

Trump has frequently decried indictments against him as part of a “witch hunt” and has called them “election interference” on behalf of Biden, who would likely be his general election opponent if he wins the GOP nomination.

The former president himself has been indicted four times this year on various charges in separate jurisdictions. He was indicted on charges related to alleged falsification of business records in Manhattan, alleged mishandling of classified documents in a federal court in Florida, and separate charges on alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election in a Fulton County, Georgia, court and in federal court in Washington, D.C. Trump has denounced and pleaded not guilty to each of the charges in the indictments.
