Two Michigan State University basketball stars will headline the first-ever Youth Sports Symposium at Cairns Community Center on Sunday in Mount Clemens.
MSU players Mady Sissoko and Jaxon Kohler will be part of the symposium put on by LK St. Clair Sports Club, a non-profit amateur soccer club. Organizers expect the event will become an annual one.
“This unique event will feature a blend of fall sports registrations, sports demonstrations, sports psychology
presentations, college player meet and greets/autograph signings, and more,” organizers said in a news release.
The event will have three time slots for various grade levels. Those in grades 3-5 will attend 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. ; grades 6-8 will go from 2-4:30 p.m.; and grades 9-12 will finish the day from 5-7:30 p. m.
Organizers said the MSU hoops stars were selected because of their impact on life off the basketball court.
The foundation has facilitated construction of a school, provided clean drinking water, and
contributed to improving everyday life in native African village of Mali. He has used his NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) earnings for similar goals.
Kohler has been vocal about his faith, the importance of family, and his desire to give back and help others.
In addition, sports psychology consultant, Lindsay Huddleston of SPS Edge will give athletes, parents, and coaches his perspective as they start a new school year and sports season. Huddleston has been a consultant for Michigan State University football and basketball, and regularly works with elite-level athletes to discover their fullest potential.
According to the release, the event was created to rally the community and highlight opportunities for involvement in youth athletics to the children, parents, business owners, and community members of Mount Clemens and surrounding communities.
Jodi Switalski, a former district court judge in Waterford who runs a law firm in partnership with her husband, former Macomb County Circuit Court Judge Mark Switalski, said she is a regular financial donor to LK St. Clair Soccer because it is affordable to area families.
“With a background in child development with a deep understanding of prevention and wellness as an integral part of community and children’s growth, participation in activities has been shown to prevent so many issues including substance abuse, mental health concerns, truancy, and more,” she said in a statement.
Switalski described the program’s coaches as “top-notch and highly trained,” who are committed to building self-esteem and engaging the kids in movement while learning.
