CLAYSBURG — Dr. Edward D. Schultz is being remembered as a friend to many and a leader in the community.
Schultz, 86, of Claysburg, died Wednesday at UPMC Altoona.
He served the local medical community for many years, entering medical practice with his father in 1964 and retiring in 1994 from Claysburg Medical Associates.
Dick Lingenfelter said he and Schultz started in first grade together and were best friends for 80 years.
“He was a class act and a great human being. He was easy to get along with. In 80 years, we never had an argument,” Lingenfelter said “We did lots of things together and in the community. He helped build the Claysburg Area Park. He was very active in the community.”
Both Rich Allison and Roger Knisely said Schultz was their doctor and a good friend.
“When he moved back in 1964, he was in practice with his father. We became very good friends and hung out together and went on vacations together. We have been friends for most of my life,” Allison said. “He was a great guy.”
Schultz was helpful to anyone who wanted it.
“We went on vacations and spent a lot of time together. He had an enormous impact on the community. For most people in Claysburg, he was their doctor for many years and his father was a doctor before him,” Knisely said. “Most everyone in Claysburg knew the Schultzes. He was just a great man; I can’t tell you anything bad about him.”
Allison said Schultz was a very mild-mannered, caring person.
“If someone needed a doctor, they could just knock on his door and he would take care of them. They would go to his home rather than the emergency room,” Allison said.
Schultz was an avid University of Pittsburgh sports fan and enjoyed attending basketball and football games.
After retirement, Schultz and his wife, Bonnie, traveled as much as they could, always researching and planning the best trips for everyone. He was always the life of the party at any social event and was first to volunteer when anyone needed anything. Mostly, he loved spending time with family and planning the next adventure. He enjoyed golfing and was a member of Iron Masters Country Club.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Newry, with Father Allen P. Zeth, celebrant.
