Rainbow Wahine bounce back by beating Cal Poly | News, Sports, Jobs

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.–The University of Hawaii women’s volleyball team bounced back after falling in a tough, five-set match at UC Santa Barbara on Friday night with a four-set win over Cal Poly on Saturday at the Mott Athletic Center.

Amber Igiede put down a match-high 16 kills and had four blocks to lead the Rainbow Wahine (13-6, 6-2 Big West) in the 25-18, 22-25, 25-21, 25-16 win.

Igiede powered UH in Set 3, pounding down six kills with no errors on eight swings. Although she only had one kill in the fourth, she was in on three big blocks that helped propel the ‘Bows into a tie for second place with Long Beach State at 6-2 in conference play.

Getting her first start of the season at libero was Tayli Ikenaga, who came through with a team-high 12 digs. With Ikenaga serving, Hawaii went on clutch extended scoring runs in both the third and fourth sets. She added three assists and a pair of aces.

Caylen Alexander, starting at opposite for UH, notched her seventh double-double of the season with 12 kills and 10 digs, and Paula Guersching had 12 kills, nine digs and four blocks. Kennedi Evans added a team-high five blocks and Kate Lang had 44 assists — UH posted a .194 hitting percentage to Cal Poly’s .088 — and nine digs.

Lizzy Markoviska had 15 kills to lead the Mustangs (11-9, 5-3).

The Rainbow Wahine conclude their three-match conference roadtrip at UC Davis on Tuesday.
