Early goal by Davis, strong performance by Noga lead Big Red past Yeowomen

Date:

GRANVILLE, Ohio (October 17, 2023) – Callie Davis’ goal less than three minutes in resulted in a 1-0 victory for the Denison University women’s soccer team over Oberlin College on Tuesday afternoon at Piper Stadium.

Making her second straight start was Eliza Roach, who less than three minutes in took the ball up the near sideline and then helped Denison score early with an assist on a left-footed shot from just under 20 yards out by Davis that was just over the reach of the Yeowomen goalkeeper. It was the team-leading fourth goal of the season for Davis.

Oberlin nearly answered in the 27th minute as a corner kick led to a deflection that was slapped away by Molly Noga, who added a diving save to keep the ball out of the goal in the 37th minute.

Denison was outshot 6-3 in the first half while Noga accounted for three saves, and then Noga continued to play great as she added a save on the first shot of the second half (55th minute).

Starting with a pair of missed shots by Mara McGlone in the 68th and 69th minutes, the Big Red offense tried to pick up the pace late in the second half as Davis missed high in the 72nd minute, Emma Wecht’s shot was blocked in the 77th minute, and shots by Lauren Jensen (78th minute) and Katie Harding (80th minute) were both saved.

Davis, McGlone and Kendall Sierens all finished with two shot attempts for Denison while Noga finished with four saves and recorded her fifth clean sheet of the season. It was also Noga’s fifth match in a row with four or more saves.

Denison (5-2-6 overall, 2-0-2 North Coast Athletic Conference) remains unbeaten four matches into its conference slate for the fourth season in a row. In addition, it was the third straight 1-0 win for the Big Red over Oberlin (6-6-2, 1-2-1) in the last three seasons.

Denison will close out the week with a 7 p.m. kickoff on Saturday, October 21, at Hiram College before entering the final week of the regular season next week.
