No. 3 Big Red take down D-I Xavier in home opener

GRANVILLE, Ohio (October 28, 2023) – No. 3 nationally-ranked Denison University women’s swimming captured seven event victories as it defeated NCAA Division I Xavier University 140-122 on Saturday afternoon at the Trumbull Aquatics Center in Granville. Denison has now defeated Xavier twice in a row and seven times overall in the nine years of their current annual dual meet. Both sophomore Quinn Brown (500 freestyle; 1000 freestyle) and freshman Liv Chow (200 backstroke; 200 IM) picked up two individual wins on the day while Chow added a third win in the 200 medley relay.

Denison started off the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay as Chow, Riley Tofflemire, Phoebe Ferguson and Esme Wright finished first with a time of 1:45.25 while Jassy Park, Drue Thielking, Maja Palmroos and Grace Kadlecik were third at 1:45.83 and Claire Moody, Zoe Barclay, Emma Pritchett and Emily Harris were fourth at 1:50.33.

Brown followed with her first of two wins in the meet, doing so with a time of 10:27.48 in the 1000 freestyle while Tara Witkowski was third at 10:36.89, Taryn Wisner was fourth at 10:41.30 and Erika Schraber was fifth at 10:45.93.

Wright (1:54.57) and Harris (1:55.15) were third and fourth in the 200 freestyle, respectively, before Park (57.57) and Chow (58.21) were back-to-back in first and second place in the 100 backstroke.

Tofflemire (1:04.84), Thielking (1:06.00) and Barclay (1:08.41) finished in order between second and fourth place in the 100 breaststroke while in the 200 butterfly, Kelly Derasmo (2:08.52) was second, Nikki Barnas (2:09.77) was fourth, Maria Mrosko (2:11.21) was fifth and Pritchett (2:12.46) was sixth.

In the 50 freestyle, Kadlecik (24.19) was second, Palmroos (24.87) was third and Olivia Morse (25.55) and Caroline Cavalier (25.55) were tied for fifth.

Following the 100 freestyle in which Ferguson (53.64) was third, Kadlecik (54.28) and Avery Vogen (54.28) were tied for fourth, and Annie Pfeufer (54.62) was sixth, Xavier tied the meet for the first time at 75-75.

Fortunately for the Big Red, Chow answered with a win in the 200 backstroke, clocking in at 2:05.29, while Park (2:08.35) and Courtney McKeown (2:10.69) were back-to-back in fourth place and fifth place to help Denison retake the lead at 87-82.

Thielking followed with a win and a time of 2:23.46 in the 200 breaststroke while Tofflemire (2:27.56) and Barclay (2:27.86) were back-to-back in third and fourth as Denison’s lead expanded to 101-87.

Denison continued to add to its lead in the 500 freestyle as Brown finished first with a time of 5:06.84 while Harris was right behind her in second place at 5:07.22 and Witkowski (5:11.59) and Wisner (5:15.34) were back-to-back in fifth and sixth place.

Ferguson was second with a time of 57.68 seconds in the 100 butterfly while Pritchett was fourth at 58.84 seconds and Palmroos was fifth at 58.93 seconds.

In the final individual event, the 200 IM, Chow picked up her second individual win of the meet with a time of 2:09.79 while Wright was third at 2:10.88 and Park was fourth at 2:11.58.

The home opener for the Big Red was capped off with the 400 freestyle relay as Harris, Pfeufer, Kadlecik and Ferguson finished second with a combined time of 3:34.07.

There were no diving events held during this dual meet.

Denison returns to action next weekend on Saturday, November 4, when they host No. 2 nationally-ranked Kenyon College in a dual meeting beginning at 10 a.m. The meet will be streamed live by the Denison Sports Network beginning at 9:45 a.m.
