Apple notified a number of Indian opposition lawmakers this week that their phones were likely targets of state-sponsored attackers, prompting several of the individuals to express concern about the possible use of surveillance by the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“Apple believes you are being targeted by state-sponsored attackers who are trying to remotely compromise the iPhone associated with your Apple ID,” said the notification dated Oct. 30 from Apple, according to two of the emails seen by The Wall Street Journal. “These attackers are likely targeting you individually because of who you are or what you do.”
