The St. Helens Football season has come to an end after a tough loss to Seaside saw their playoff hopes snuffed out.
Despite the loss on Oct. 27, the team ended with a winning overall record, something that Head Coach Nic Shular and his team are proud of.
“The team felt good about the regular season,” Shular said. “We had a winning season for the first time since 2016, and I know the seniors are proud of that.”
In what amounted to a “win you’re in, lose you’re out” game against Seaside, the Lions just couldn’t quite muster the offensive firepower to get the win. The final score saw Seaside victorious by a score of 27-12.
“The game on Friday was a competitive game. Seaside did a good job of controlling the tempo of the game and preventing our offense from getting into any sort of rhythm,” Shular said. “We had too many three-and-outs on offense, which resulted in our defense being out on the field for way too many plays overall.”
The Lions finished fourth in the 4A-SD1 Special District 1, just one spot away from a playoff berth. While coming so close will sting, Shular is excited about the direction of the program moving forward and believes the best is yet to come for the younger players on the team.
“Our seniors did a great job of creating positive momentum for this program moving forward, and now it’s on the younger players to continue that trajectory and to continue to build this program back up,” Shular said.
