FIVE FRIARS EARN ALL-BIG EAST ACCOLADES
Brendan McSorley named to All-BIG EAST First Team.
NEW YORK, N.Y.- The BIG EAST announced its annual men’s soccer awards today (Nov. 7). Providence College senior Brendan McSorley (Randolph, N.J.) was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team. Seniors Lukas Burns (Cinniminson, N.J.), Gevork Diarbian (Cranston, R.I.), and sophomore Diego Batista (Barcelos, Portugal) were named to All-BIG EAST Second Team. Cole Dewhurst (Lancaster, Mass.) earned All-BIG EAST Third Team recognition.
During the regular season, McSorley consistently led Providence in both points and goals, capping off the regular season with nine goals and one assist, for a total of 19 points. In the BIG EAST Quarterfinal match on Nov.4 against the No.6-Seed Creighton, McSorley netted two goals for the Friars, including the game-winning goal within the first minute of the game. Throughout the current season, McSorley has been a constant presence, starting in all 16 games and logging 1,244 minutes for the Friars. His tally now stands at a career-high 11 goals and one assist, totaling 23 points. This season, McSorley has garnered several weekly accolades, such as being named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll (10/2/23), earning the title of BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week (10/23/23), and being recognized as College Soccer News Men’s National Player of the Week (10/23/23).
Goalkeeper Lukas Burns has played all 1440 minutes in net for the Friars this season, averaging a .677 save percentage and 1.25 goals against average. This year, Burns had an impressive five-game shutout streak, including a shutout against then-ranked No.5 Georgetown in the 1-0 upset on Oct.14. In the BIG EAST Quarterfinal match on Nov.4 against No.6-Seed Creighton, Burns tallied two saves to earn a shutout and help Providence to a 3-0 win. Over the course of the season, Burns has earned BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll (10/9/23), BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week (10/16/23), and College
Soccer News Men’s National Team of the Week (10/16/23).
Gevork Diarbian has started all 63 games during his four seasons as a Friar. During the regular season this year, Diarbian registed two goals and four assists for a total of eight points. In the BIG EAST Quarterfinal match on Nov.4 against No.6-Seed Creighton, Diarbian marked three shots and an assist in the 70th minute to help Providence to a 3-0 win. This season, Diarbian was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team, and two times to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll (9/18, 10/16). Over his career, Diarbian has earned numerous honors and awards including (3/8/21), All-BIG EAST Third Team, , United Soccer Coaches All-East Region Second Team (2021), and United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Men’s Players To Watch List-Forwards (2022). Diarbian’s recognition to All-BIG EAST Second Team marks the third in his career.
In his first year as a Friar, Batista has been a key player in the midfield, recording five assists and one goal in the regular season. Batista marked his lone goal of the season on Sept. 15, which helped the team to a 3-3 tie against then-ranked No.3 Akron. Batista’s recognition to the All-BIG EAST Second Team marks his first accolade at Providence.
Cole Dewhurst has been a pillar in the Friar defense throughout the 2023 season. With Dewhurst in backline, the Friars have conceded only two goals in the past eight games. In the ocean-state matchup against URI on Sept.4, Dewhurst opened the scoring for the Friars in the 62nd minute to help lead Providence to a 2-1 win. Dewhurst has a career-high of two goals on the season. Dewhurst’s recognition to the All-BIG EAST Third Team marks the first accolade of his career.
