Grabbing a bite with Joey Wright

On Saturdays, we chop it up with the folks responsible for dishing up food around the area. What restaurant should we try next? Let Joey Wright know at [email protected].

An ownership change won’t change much for Boomerang’s in Urbana.

The neighborhood bar favored among locals at the intersection of Washington Street and Philo Avenue in Urbana has been under the leadership of Stuart Candlin and Deana Davis for just over three months.

“I wanted the locals to know that this is the place to come and hang out,” Candlin said. “A lot of musical acts and we’re trying to update those and kind of freshen that up … we’re kind of looking at being a neighborhood bar and music venue.”

Some menu items have changed names. Recipes for the chicken strips and fries have been updated.

There are new suppliers for some menu items, including the chicken wings, which have led to positive reviews from customers.

Keeping prices low is also a focal point.

“The economy has hit everybody,” Candlin said. “So we’re trying not to come in and just jack the prices or anything like that. I’ve been doing a lot of research in the area and trying to keep the prices competitive.”

Folks can expect live music to continue at the venue, too. Candy Foster will carry on his tradition of playing there before Thanksgiving on Nov. 22.

“My plan was to pretty much keep the Boomerang’s name alive and do the things that they used to do,” Candlin said. “And then just update and freshen up a few things that need it.”
