Jamestown High School’s cross country teams ended their seasons with a banquet. The event was held at St Luke’s Episcopal Church and was packed full of runners, family members and team supporters, all of whom were in a celebratory mood.

The boys and girls cross country teams had a record-breaking season — both in the amount of student athletes who competed and the number of wins.

“This year we had 28 boys running and 16 girls,” said Christine Hockenberry, who coaches the girls cross country team. “The boys team went undefeated, and the girls placed fifth in the county.”

The coaches attributed the successful year to a variety of reasons.

“We recruited heavily the last few years at the middle school levels,” said Tony Dolce, an assistant coach. “This year, the kids put in a lot of work to get better. The coaching staff is some of the best in the area, and the kids were really focused on improving with every practice and meet.”

Moreover, for some of the runners, it was just the fun, friendships and comradery that made the season all worth it.

“I liked the experience,” said Julia Stormont, a seventh grader at Washington Middle School and cross country runner. “Everyone, including the other teams we faced, was supportive and made this whole season worth it.”

The banquet featured a full taco bar, fresh-baked desserts and a variety of drinks.
