The Arizona Green Party turned in signatures to the Secretary of State’s Office on Tuesday in an attempt to again become a recognized political party in the state.
Third parties seeking official status need to collect 34,127 valid signatures to achieve recognition. Green Party officials estimated they collected 63,000 signatures during their petition drive this year.
Former Arizona Green Party party co-chair and past write-in gubernatorial candidate Liana West says she is confident the party will qualify for the ballot in 2024.
“Our political view as the Green Party is everyone has a voice,” she said. “We would like to participate in Democracy and here’s our request.”
The Secretary of State’s Office and county recorders will now verify the signatures collected by Green Party supporters. Officials from the state’s Republican and Democratic parties were on hand to observe when Green Party members turned in signatures.
The Arizona Green Party was a recognized political party in Arizona until 2019, when it lost that status after it a poor showing in the 2018 gubernatorial election and a failure to accrue the minimum number of registered voters required by state law.
The Arizona Green Party is the third political party to apply for recognition this year following No Labels, which qualified for the ballot, and the Patriot Party, which fell short.
