Assessing the mayoral runoff – Houston Public Media

Houston Matters Political Roundup

State Senator John Whitmire and Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee debated one another Monday night, following the release of a Houston Public Media/Houston Chronicle/UH Political Science and Population Health Poll showing Whitmire holds a 7-point lead over Jackson Lee, heading into the December 9 runoff.

Whitmire leads Jackson Lee 42 to 35 percent, with 22 percent of those polled undecided.

In the audio above, we discuss this and other developments in politics with Renee Cross, senior director and researcher at the Hobby School of Public Affairs at the University of Houston, and Mark Jones, political science fellow at Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy.

Additional topics include Vice President Kamala Harris’s Houston visit Monday, and news that Texas State University in San Marcos will host the first of four scheduled general election presidential debates next September.

Plus, we discuss some Congressional primary races of interest, efforts by the Biden Administration to get a truce between Israel and Hamas extended and more hostages freed, and the political fate of Congressman George Santos, as a vote’s expected as soon as Wednesday afternoon in the U.S. House over whether to expel him.

A House Ethics Committee recently released a report finding evidence that Santos broke federal laws and used campaign funds for personal benefit. He’s alleged, among other things, of taking $50,000 from his campaign to buy luxury apparel among other personal purchases. It’s been long reported that he made up a great deal of his resume on the campaign trail.

He’s already said he will not run for re-election, but he’s refused to resign.
