Date:

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is happy to announce the hiring of Carolina MacQuarrie, who will serve as the new Assistant Director of Sports Medicine. MacQuarrie will begin her appointment on June 17.

“I am pleased to announce the appointment of Carolina MacQuarrie as our new Assistant Director for Sports Medicine,” said Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Susan Bassett ’79. “Carolina is an exceptional health care professional with vast clinical experience. She brings a wealth of knowledge as an athletic trainer which coupled with her certification as a Physical Therapist make her uniquely qualified to lead our efforts in Sports Medicine.  She is a dynamic individual who is fully committed to high level care for student-athletes and the educational experience of our AT students.  I am confident that Carolina will lead our staff with emotional intelligence and as a strong collaborator with physicians, coaches, faculty, and staff.  I look forward to welcoming her to the Ithaca College community.”

MacQuarrie comes to South Hill after spending the last three years as an assistant athletic trainer at Williams College, where she worked with eight varsity athletic teams. She was also responsible for developing rehabilitative, preventative and performance enhancement exercises for student-athletes and work with the team physician to determine return-to-play decisions.

“First off, I want to thank Susan Bassett and the search committee for giving me the opportunity to lead the sports medicine department at Ithaca College,” said MacQuarrie. “I am beyond excited to be joining incredible athletic trainers, student athletes, coaches and administrators on South Hill.”

Prior to her time at Williams, MacQuarrie was managing and working as a physical therapist in her own PT clinic located in Brazil. At the same time, she was working as a physical and respiratory therapist in ICU units of several different hospitals.

“We are excited to welcome Carolina to lead our sports medicine team,” said athletic trainer Courtney Gray. “With her diverse clinical background and strong leadership, she will enrich our commitment to providing top-tier care to our 800+ student athletes. Carolina’s distinct perspective and enthusiasm will be invaluable in helping us continue to evolve Ithaca College Athletic Training, in tandem with enhancing the educational experience of students in our accredited education program. We want to thank Mike Matheny for his 37 years of leadership and service to the IC Athletic Training Education Program and IC Athletics and wish him a well deserved and enjoyable retirement”

A native of Brazil, MacQuarrie graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training from Nebraska Wesleyan University in 2013 and shortly after earned her Master of Science in Athletic Training from California University of Pennsylvania, while working as a Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer for the volleyball, women’s swimming and men’s and women’s golf teams.

MacQuarrie also worked as an assistant athletic trainer at Washington & Jefferson College (2014-15). She earned her physical therapy degree in 2018 at Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil.

Her husband, Dan MacQuarrie, served as an assistant men’s and women’s swimming & diving coach at Ithaca College for two years during the 2016 and 2017 academic years.

“The Bombers have always strived for greatness; academically and athletically, and I can’t wait to be a part of that,” MacQuarrie said. “My goal is to continually build up on the tradition that is IC athletics and give our student athletes the best care and experience possible. GO BOMBERS!”
