For head coach Drew Schulte, building off last year’s two-win team is a process.
Game by game, brick by brick.
That is how Schulte and his Lady Indians are preparing to the 2024-25 season.
“I believe every game is important and a must-win. Our schedule is tough and so are the teams we play. We are not going to overlook anyone. Each game is just as big as the next one,” Schulte said.
The Lady Indians lost one starter and three lettermen off last year’s unit.
This year, the team returns three starters and seven returning lettermen.
Back in the fold this season are Ashtyn Lannon, senior, 5’8”.
“Ashtyn does a great job inspiring her teammates in a leadership role. She has relentless determination and a never-give-up attitude,” Schulte said.
Senior Daelynd Campbell.
“I look to her to step up in patrolling the paint area. She does a great job with low post defense, and offense. We look to her to elevate her game down low,” Schulte said.
Senior Callie Rhoades, who fought an ankle injury last season.
Said Schulte: “I look forward to her stepping up in a leadership role. She does a great job with talking and communicating.”
Senior Maddie Collingsworth
“Very smart and can play any position on the floor. I look forward to her being a bigger threat on offense than before,” Schulte said.
Senior Kahli Fields will look to continue her stingy defensive play and senior Makailey Mitchell also returns.
“Big impact player for us last year. She can shoot the ball well and be an on-ball terror on defense,” Schulte said of Fields. “[Mitchell] will compete for varsity time this year. She could be a nice addition to our outside threat this year on offense.”
Juniors include Olivia Hase, Olivia Wade and Bella Middick.
The Lady Indians welcome three additions to this year’s club in Marylynn Gil, a 5’10” freshman.
Added Schulte: “Very tall and athletic. She can shoot from multiple spots on the floor. Finishes well on the inside and can drive and finish. Defensively, inside the paint, she will be long, lanky, and will deflect a lot of shots.”
Other newcomers include two players from Spain: 5’9” junior forward Candela Jiminez and Alba Alonso, a 5’6” sophomore guard.
“As we approach the upcoming basketball season, we’re excited to build on the strong foundation established by our six seniors who have played together since their sophomore year. Their experience and leadership will be crucial as we integrate some talented younger players who are ready to provide a spark and make an immediate impact,” Schulte said. “To succeed, we must emphasize discipline and consistency in our play, focusing on a fast-paced style that keeps our opponents on their heels. Additionally, rebounding will be a key priority, as we aim to control the boards and prevent second-chance opportunities. With a commitment to teamwork and effort, we believe this season has the potential to be truly special.”
The previous Big 8 West title came in 2020-21.
The preseason jamboree will pit Seneca, at home, against Nevada and Monett.
The Lady Indians open the season on Nov. 25 at Neosho. The home opener is Dec. 12 against Verona.
This makes the seventh year at Seneca for Schulte.
