A look at the way politics used to be | News, Sports, Jobs

Date:

Do you remember when…

Do you remember when “we” used to elect a new president? We accepted our new president whether we had voted for him or not. Life went on; it was no big deal. He was the president of all the people.

Do you remember when we had a peaceful transfer of power from one president to the next? All the past presidents showed up for the inauguration to pay their respects to the new president. And they kept quiet as the new president charted his course in governing the nation.

Do you remember when we all listened to the same news? The news broadcasters seemed to be neutral on the issues; you did not know whether they were a Democrat or a Republican. Now, we choose the broadcasters that agree with us, and some of us do not get the whole picture.

Do you remember when Democrats and Republicans used to work with each other to take care of the nation’s business? We ended up with legislation that was not too far to the left or too far to the right. That is how “Roe” was decided 50 years ago; it was a compromise and it worked very well.

Do you remember when the Supreme Court was more evenly divided between the “right” and the “left?” Their decisions were closer to the “middle” in those days and more acceptable to most Americans. Thanks to Mitch McConnell and our last president, we now have a Supreme Court that is out of step with most Americans.

Do you remember any time in our history when a political party would refuse to pay the nation’s debts unless they got what they wanted — like forcing the president to go along with their demands? This is totally unacceptable.

We have two main political parties, and we need two strong parties to help our leaders steer a course somewhere in the middle.

A political party that holds minority views and tries to force those views on the rest of us, is unacceptable.

Last of all, no one is above the law or the constitution. Whether the name is Trump or Biden, if laws were broken, we have an independent justice system to take care of it.
