President Biden is set to visit Israel and Jordan on Wednesday, as a push by the U.S. and Egypt to open Gaza’s border crossing with Egypt stalls.

Airstrikes: Hamas said the commander of the central brigade of its military wing was killed in a strike in the Gaza Strip. Warplanes hit what the Israeli military described as Hamas’s operational headquarters overnight.

U.S.: The U.S. military has selected about 2,000 troops to prepare for a potential deployment to support Israel, U.S. defense officials said.

Ground offensive: Israel hasn’t committed to a ground invasion of Gaza, an Israeli military spokesman said.

Summit: Egypt is planning to host an international summit to address the crisis.

Casualties: More than 1,400 Israelis have died since the Hamas assault began. Israel said 289 of its soldiers have been killed. In Gaza, officials said the Palestinian death toll is at about 3,000. The number of U.S. citizens killed has risen to 30, while 13 remain unaccounted for.

Hostages: A spokesman for the armed wing of Hamas said that the group was holding around 200 people hostage, with at least 50 others held by other factions. Hamas released a video of a 21-year-old hostage who identified herself as Mia Schem.
