- A News Tribune & Herald poll shows Mayor John Fedo and opponent Shirley Swain appear to be running neck-and-neck with a large share of voters still undecided. Of those surveyed, 43% say they would vote for Swain, 38% for Fedo, and 18% undecided.
- Voters in the Ewen-Trout Creek school district, about 50 miles east of Ironwood, Michigan, chose to eliminate school bus service rather than raise taxes. The district is 480 square miles and some students travel 550 miles a week to go to school.

- A mining museum, sponsored by the Chisholm Chamber of Commerce, is planned to be opened in Chisholm next summer. T.H. Williams, chamber president, believes that at least 150,000 people will visit the museum each season.
- A 69-year-old Iron Range woman was released pending a decision on a deportation hearing by immigration officials. The Finland native, who now lives about nine miles southwest of Virginia with her husband, faces exile from the U.S. under a law that allows the deportation of foreign-born citizens who hold or have held membership in the Communist party.
