BELPRE — At one time Carson Moore was sure he wanted to pursue a career in the engineering field, but on a visit to the Washington County Career Center, another field caught his interest.

That field was sports medicine and he has excelled in his studies.

Moore, a senior at Belpre High School, is enrolled in the sports medicine and exercise science program at the Washington County Career Center. He is the son of Eric Moore of Port Charlotte, Fla., and Danielle Moore of Belpre.

He starts his day with classes at the career center and then spends the afternoon at Belpre High School, where he has an internship in the athletic department.

“Usually I’m helping the athletic director, the PE teacher and athletic trainer,” he said. “During the basketball season, we cleaned the floor before games, simple stuff like that for the department; making sure everybody gets what they need.”

Moore is also a youth baseball volunteer.

Moore is a member of the Belpre High School basketball, baseball and golf teams, where he is team captain. Moore said golf is his best sport, where he was named to first team all-district, Tri-Valley Conference player of the year and all TVC academic.

After high school he said he plans to continue studying sports medicine. Moore will attend Marietta College on a golf scholarship next year.

Before his first visit to the career center, he was interested in engineering.

“When I started high school, I was on a big engineering kick,” he said. “I knew I was going to be an engineer, but after I went to the Career Center that really changed my mind about the future.”

At the Career Center, Moore has earned industry-recognized credentials or certifications for automated external defibrillator, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, first aid, stop the bleed, physical therapy technician certification and basic life support.

“There are a lot of certain things that are quick, in action scenarios, that if you see something on the street you know you are certified to take that action and help that person,” he said. “All of those are entry-level certificates into the medical field.”

Through the College Credit Plus program, he has or will earn both high school and college credit for American national government, English composition, algebra, exercise science, first aid-personal safety, health and fitness foundations, introduction to nutrition, medical terminology, resistance training, statistics and technical writing.

At the Career Center, Carson is a member of the SkillsUSA youth organization and National Technical Honor Society. He has been on the Career Center’s principal list and honor roll.

He is also a student ambassador.

“We represent the Career Center,” he said. “We are like recruiters for the Career Center; when we have eighth-graders visit we show them around and answer any questions they may have.”

When he graduates from high school he will have 43 college credits. After one year in college he will have two years worth of college credit, he said.

After college, Moore said he would like to go into orthopedic equipment sales.

“I’ve got family members in that field,” he said. “I’ve talked to them and they really enjoy their jobs. That’s what motivated me; I want to find something I’m going to enjoy.”
