Churchill Downs announces 6 sports wagering books in Kentucky and when they’ll open
Churchill Downs Inc. is sharing new details about what sports betting books will look like at its facilities in Kentucky and online.It was granted operating licenses on Tuesday by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission.In-person bets start on Thursday, Sept. 7, just in time for football season.On Wednesday morning, the Churchill Downs track announced it will have 15 sports betting kiosks, a 168-square-feet video screen and 20 other smaller screens.Click here to access Churchill Downs’ online betting portalThe kiosks will be incorporated into existing bar and racing simulcast areas so fans can watch live racing and college and professional sports while placing bets.But the track isn’t the only place where you will be able to wager on your favorite teams and players.There will also be sports betting at Derby City Gaming and Hotel on Poplar Level Road, Ellis Park, Newport Racing, Oak Grove and Turfway Park in other parts of Kentucky.”You can bet on basketball, you can bet on baseball, you can bet on hockey, you can bet on tennis, you can bet on soccer. Any sport you think of, you can pretty much bet here,” General Manager of Derby City Gaming, Bridget Harmon, told WLKY.Harmon said they are working around the clock to set up all the equipment needed to officially get sports betting up and running.By the numbers, here’s what you can expect at the other facilities (including links to their online betting): Derby City Gaming & Hotel in Louisville – 15 sports betting kiosks, 300 sq. ft. video screen, 12 large format televisions Ellis Park Racing & Gaming in Henderson – 5 sports betting kiosks Newport Racing & Gaming in Newport – 10 sports betting kiosks, 20 large format televisions Oak Grove Racing, Gaming & Hotel in Oak Grove – 20 sports betting kiosks, 300 sq. ft. video screen, 8 large format televisions Turfway Park Racing & Gaming in Florence – 15 sports betting kiosks, 300 sq. ft. video screen, 16 large format televisions Each track will also have 15-minute “bet and jet” parking so you can quickly and easily wager in person.Whether you are in a hurry or stay to watch a game, Harmon said the best part is people will no longer have to leave the state to bet on sports.”We’re expecting big crowds. And the nice thing is, we’re ready for them,” said Harmon. “We’re hoping there’s lines out the door to place that first bet.”Sports betting officially kicks off at 10 a.m. on Sept. 7.
