Al Jazeera’s Sonia Gallego is in Granada to cover the talks.
She says there are “already signs of strains over differences of opinion” after the apparent cancellation of the talks between the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia.
“European diplomats hoped there would be some movement on certain key issues, even fostering a broader peace treaty but that’s been postponed. There’s also the issue of Sweden’s entry into NATO; Turkey and Hungary have yet to ratify that treaty in their respective parliaments,” Gallego said.
Regarding immigration, Gallego said Italy’s Meloni “has been very vocal over this issue especially over the recent spike of arrivals and undocumented migrants from the North African coast. This has been an issue also playing out in Eastern Europe with Poland, Slovakia and Hungary restricting them to reduce and limit the amount of undocumented people arriving from the Balkan route.
“The decision to restrict movement between these borders as well as the ongoing anti-immigrant rhetoric from certain leaders is casting a shadow over the event, making it more difficult to encourage an atmosphere of tolerance here over the next two days.”
