FAIRMONT — It’s the day after Thanksgiving and you’re suffering from a turkey hangover.
Thinking about what you’ve consumed at your relatives’ holiday get-together, the humorous Bubba scene from “Forrest Gump” comes to mind.
“Roasted turkey, turkey gravy on mashed potatoes, turkey stuffing, turkey sandwiches, turkey soup … “ Get the mental image?
The Detroit Lions have broken their holiday tradition by actually winning an NFL game on Thanksgiving Day to take a commanding 9-2 overall record in the NFC North Division standings over the Josh Dobbs-led Minnesota Vikings.
Just a side note — tickets for the Green Bay Packers–Detroit Lions game at Ford Field in Detroit are listed as starting at $190 apiece!
Trey Lance, former Marshall High School standout, gets the late start when Dallas starting quarterback Dak Prescott suffers a mild case of food poisoning when he eats too much Turducken at Troy Aikman’s house the day before the holiday.
Lance breaks Fantasy Football players’ hearts — no one had him activated for the game — by throwing for 300 yards and four touchdowns to go with 75 rushing yards and another score in the Cowboys’ win over the Washington (pencil in a better nickname than Commanders here).
Unfortunately for the sports world, you’re still trying to forget Game 3 of Thursday’s NFL television lineup as NBC announcer Cris Collinsworth’s Captain Obvious comments and endless drivel have made fellow announcer Mike Tirico finally utter, “Please. Stop. Talking.”
Quarterback Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers survive former Fairmont Sentinel sports writer Kyle McAreavy’s Seattle Seahawks to take a two-game lead in the NFC West Division.
While the AFC East Division-leading Miami Dolphins are playing a rare Friday-after-Thanksgiving Day NFL game against the Aaron Rodgers-less New York Jets at 2 p.m. Central time, skip it.
Why? (If you’ve read this far, the real story is this. Had to test your patience!!)
Grab a good will offering, get in your vehicle and take a drive to Cardinal Gym at Fairmont High School to watch the 10th annual Fairmont Alumni basketball tournament. Action tips off at 10 a.m. and will conclude approximately around 3 p.m. Friday.
Former Cardinal hardwood standouts from 1991-2020, along with some current FHS staff, will hit the court and square off for four games in pool play. Games will be 20 minutes long, with running time occurring until the final 60 seconds.
The self-proclaimed Large and in Charge team of Dan Betts, Carter Bell, Dan Brummond, Jacob Crissinger, Dustin Schultz, Wyatt Frank, Carson Toomer, Joey Flohrs, Ryan Hennager and Jack Hested won the 2022 holiday tournament event.
