CONWAY, Ark. – The Northwestern State women’s tennis team travels to Conway, Arkansas, for the UCA Invitational, its second tournament during the fall season.
Doubles play is set to start Friday to begin the action at the Conway Tennis Center.
NSU was impressive in its home meet, the Lady Demon Invitational, where Tjasa Klevisar and newcomer Honoka Umeda each claimed victories in their singles draws. NSU also would have won the third singles draw as well since Lady Demon teammates were to face off in the final, but coach Marcos Minelli chose not to have Sara Erenda and Sofi Garcia play.
Garcia and Erenda teamed up to win their doubles draw in tight fashion, winning their last two matches by identical 7-5 scores.
Erenda, freshman from Hall in Triol, Austria, is in her first year as a Demon. She competed in the orange singles draw with dominating performances against USM (6-2, 6-2) and TJC (6-0, 6-1) before the championship was called.
Competing in her first event for NSU, Umeda pulled out a pair of wins in super tiebreakers Friday. The freshman rolled to a triumph in straight sets on day two against Southern Miss’ Angelina Blinova, 6-2, 6-1, to win the yellow singles draw.
The Lady Demons finish the two-day tournament Saturday before preparing for the ITA Regional in Baton Rouge, beginning Thursday.
