Lions’ Mo Ibrahim undergoes immediate surgery at hospital, will not travel with team

Date:

BALTIMORE, Md. — Detroit Lions running back Mo Ibrahim has been transported to an area hospital after dislocating his hip in the 38-6 loss on Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens. He began emergency surgery before the conclusion of the game, and will not travel home with the team.

Ibrahim suffered the injury while returning a kick in the third quarter, and players immediately began gesturing toward the sideline for help from the doctors. Ibrahim had to be strapped to a stretcher and lifted onto a cart, then was taken immediately to a hospital in the Baltimore area.

“Mo’s in the hospital and he’s having surgery right now,” head coach Dan Campbell said. “Sounds like he’ll be OK, but he’s going to stay here overnight. He’s tough. I hate that for him. But that certainly puts a strain on our team.”

Ibrahim is an undrafted rookie who initially joined the team over the summer. He was cut after suffering an injury during a preseason game, but earned another shot this past week when Detroit was hit hard by injuries at running back. David Montgomery is out with damage in his rib cartilage, while Craig Reynolds is slowed by hip and toe injuries he suffered while carrying the load last week in Tampa. He finished with just three carries for 16 yards against Baltimore.

That left Jahmyr Gibbs as the healthiest running back on the 53-man roster, and even he was returning from a hamstring injury that sidelined him the last two weeks. He wound up shouldering most of the load in Baltimore, turning 20 touches into 126 yards and the lone touchdown of the day.

In a hedge against all the injuries, the Lions signed Ibrahim to the practice squad and then elevated him for the game. Then just a few snaps into his NFL debut, he suffered a hip injury that sent him to the hospital and will likely end his season.

That’s a tough blow for a young player trying to find his way in the NFL, as well as the Lions, who are really beat up heading into next week’s showdown against Las Vegas on Monday Night Football.

The good news is receiver Kalif Raymond (cramps) and linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez (ankle) have avoided major injuries after leaving the game in the second half.

“I’m good,” Rodriguez told MLive. “I’ll be back.”

Safety Kerby Joseph also left the game to be evaluated for a brain injury. He did not return, forcing Detroit to finish the game without both starting safeties. C.J. Gardner-Johnson is on IR while recovering from pectoral surgery.

Fellow defensive backs Emmanuel Moseley (ACL) and Jerry Jacobs (knee) did not play against Baltimore at all.
