Lycoming wrestling sweeps competition at Waynesburg Duals | News, Sports, Jobs

Date:

WAYNESBURG — Four Lycoming College wrestlers won all three of their matches to lead the team to a sweep at the Waynesburg Duals, as Lycoming opened its 2023-24 dual slate with a 35-20 win over Division II Shippensburg University, a 49-6 win over Waynesburg University and a 24-14 win over 23rd-ranked Averett University on Saturday.

Junior 141-pounder Cooper Gilham, sophomore 149-pounder Kobin Karper, sophomore 174-pounder Eli Crum and junior heavyweight Robbie West all went 3-0 at the event to pace the Warriors (3-0 overall).

In the day’s finale, the Warriors won six of 10 bouts against the Cougars (4-1 overall) to beat a ranked team for the first time since a 24-17 win over Castleton on Jan. 11, 2020.

Junior Thomas Conselyea and Gilham each won with sudden-victory takedowns at 133 and 141 before Karper tacked on a major decision to give Lycoming a 10-3 lead. Averett won the next two bouts to tie it, but Crum’s 15-0 tech fall of Khalil Mitchell at 174 was followed by a wild 16-15 decision by sophomore James Ellis over Jacob Jiminiz. Ellis fell behind 6-1 in the first period, but followed that by scoring two takedowns in the second period to lead 15-11 heading into the final period, where he had a late escape to notch the winning point and make it 18-10. After an Averett major decision at 197, West decked Braeden Fluke in 2:26.

Lycoming started the day by winning six duals, all by bonus points, in a 35-20 win over Shippensburg. A pair of forfeits at 125 and 157, as well an injury default at 149, pins by Gilham and West and a tech fall from Crum made quick work of the Raiders (1-3 overall).

The Warriors won nine of the 10 bouts against Waynesburg (0-3 overall), earning bonus points in all nine of the wins.

Leading 15-0 after the first three bouts, Gilham (141), Karper (149), junior Logan Bartlett (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area) (157), first-year Ethan Kolb (Benton, Pa./Benton Area) (165) and Crum (174) had a run of five straight pins to put the meet away. West also had a pin to cap the meet at 285.

The Warriors are back on the mat on Saturday, Dec. 2, when they head to the Ohio Northern Invitational for a 9 a.m. start.
