Lynchburg political expert weighs in on the search for a new House speaker

Date:

House Republicans are feeling the pressure as the search for a new House Speaker continues.

Republican Congressman Steve Scalise and Jim Jordan have thrown their hats into the ring. The internal GOP election is happening on Wednesday.

Dr. David Richards, the Chair of the Political Science Department at the University of Lynchburg, is weighing in. He said at this point, Scalise and Jordan seem to be evenly matched. So, he thinks one of them will probably need to bow out to let the other win.

“I think Scalise has sort of more of the moderate wing behind him,” Richards said. “Jim Jordan is a little bit further to the right. He’s a little bit more kind of rambunctious, as it were. So, at this point, neither one can seem to get that majority that they’re going to need.”

Richards adds that he doesn’t think that McCarthy is going to be re-elected.

He also said there is a lot of pressure on lawmakers to act quickly and decisively because of what’s going on in Israel and with the looming budget deadline.
