Major League Baseball’s 2023 Winter Meetings are underway this week in Nashville, and most of the attention is on the biggest name in baseball free agency: Shohei Ohtani. The two-time unanimous MVP remains unsigned but the most serious suitors are beginning to emerge. The Dodgers, Blue Jays and Giants have all reportedly met with Ohtani in recent days, and the incumbent Angels are still in the mix to re-sign him. In addition to Ohtani’s free agency, Padres superstar Juan Soto is very much available on the trade market.
Ohtani could sign a deal this week, and his decision is expected by mid-December. A timeframe for a Soto trade is unknown, however, and there’s always a chance San Diego keeps him. The Yankees have been most connected to Soto, though as of Sunday, the two sides were far apart in trade negotiations. Things have been relatively slow the first month of the offseason, possibly because teams — and other free agents — are waiting for Ohtani to sign. Things were also slow on the first day of the Winter Meetings, but the transaction action should increase Tuesday and Wednesday. Once Ohtani signs, the market could really open up, especially for Japanese righty Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Several teams in on Ohtani are also reportedly in on Yamamoto.
