The Marquette City Commission earlier this week was spot on in terms of who they selected as the new mayor and mayor pro tem.
The panel unanimously chose Commissioner Sally Davis to succeed Cody Mayer as Marquette mayor during a Monday meeting.
Then, commissioners chose, also unanimously, Commissioner Jessica Hanley to serve as mayor pro-tem.
Davis is familiar to Mining Journal readers, sporting many decades in public service and employment.
She was elected to the city commission in 2019
Hanley, meanwhile, has served on the commission for two terms. She took a position as the executive director of the Upper Peninsula Children’s Museum in October.
Additionally, a new commissioner was sworn into office: Paul Schloegel.
Schloegel comes to the commission after serving on the Marquette Board of Light and Power. He was elected to a three-year term and he will take the seat of term-limited commissioner, Frederick Stonehouse.
The new leadership team on the Marquette City Commission has a full plate of compelling issues to deal with, not the least of which is the old Cliffs-Dow location in north Marquette.
The city purchased the tract, which fronts on Lakeshore Boulevard, some years ago, knowing full well that much of the property was contaminated from previous industrial uses.
Now, the site has been suggested as a potential location for a new D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans.
The issue, and how the commission and administration handle it, is something of a tightrope.
Other issues include housing, city taxes, what some would argue is a growing population of indigent persons and economic development.
A lot to do but good people to do it with.
