No. 1 Women’s Soccer Hosts No. 3 Florida State In Big Sunday Matchup

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – All eyes will be on Chapel Hill this Sunday for a big matchup between No. 1 North Carolina and No. 3 Florida State, two of the lone unbeaten teams in the country. The top-5 clash – a rematch of last year’s Atlantic Coast Conference Championship and NCAA Semifinal – will take place at noon ET at Dorrance Field. 

The game will broadcast nationally on ESPNU with Joe Malfa and Lori Lindsey on call.

Ten Things To Know

  1. North Carolina checked in at No. 1 in the recent United Soccer Coaches poll for the first time this year, in addition to holding the top spot in the season’s first RPI.
  2. The Tar Heels (7-0-3, 2-0 ACC) and Seminoles (7-0, 2-0 ACC) are two of just 12 teams across Division I who remain undefeated as of Sept. 22. 
  3. Sunday will be the 49th meeting between North Carolina and Florida State in program history.
  4. UNC leads the all-time series at 31-12-5, including a 10-2-4 mark in Chapel Hill.
  5. The two rivals faced each other three times in 2022:
    • Oct. 20 in Tallahassee: 2-1 UNC win
    • Nov. 6 in Cary (ACC Championship): 2-1 FSU win
    • Dec. 2 in Cary (NCAA Semifinal): 3-2 UNC win
  6. UNC has only conceded four goals this season and has six clean sheets. Its defense has held all 10 opponents to 11 shots or under, and has kept all its ACC opponents to under 10 shots.
  7. Senior defender Maycee Bell was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 19, the fourth such honor of her career. 
  8. Carolina owns half of the ACC player of the week honors this season, and all but one on the defensive side: Savy King (Aug. 22, Sept. 5), Sam Meza (Aug. 29), Avery Patterson (Sept. 12), Bell (Sept. 19).
  9. UNC is coming off a 1-0 win at No. 22 Virginia on Thursday night which saw Ally Sentnor score her third goal of the year, all which have been game-winners. 
  10.  Carolina’s win in Charlottesville was head coach Anson Dorrance‘s 1,100th career victory.
