NYC Travel Advisory: Heavy Rain, Gusty Winds With East Coast Storm

NEW YORK CITY — With strong winds and heavy rain in the forecast for New York City to start the week, the Emergency Management Department has issued a travel advisory for Sunday and Monday.

City officials are urging residents and visitors to remain prepared and keep an eye on the forecast, as flooding may disrupt traffic and the predicted high winds could produce widespread power outages. Coastal flooding is also possible along vulnerable shorelines during the Monday morning high tide.

A storm affecting most of the East Coast will bring increasing winds, with peak gusts around 60 miles per hour possible by evening and into the overnight Sunday. Between 2 and 3 inches of heavy rain could fall late Sunday into early Monday in the city, according to the National Weather Service and AccuWeather.

A flood watch is in effect citywide from 4 p.m. Sunday until 6 a.m. Monday, per the NWS.

A high wind watch is also in effect for Brooklyn and Queens from 4 p.m. Sunday to 6 a.m. Monday for sustained winds of 30 to 40 mph and gusts up to 60 mph.

Sunday: Rain likely in the morning, then rain with isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon. Some thunderstorms may produce heavy rainfall in the afternoon. Highs around 60. South winds 5 to 10 mph with gusts up to 20 mph, increasing to 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph in the afternoon. Chance of rain near 100 percent.

Sunday Night: Rain with isolated thunderstorms in the evening, then rain after midnight. Some thunderstorms may produce heavy rainfall in the evening. Lows in the lower 40s. South winds 15 to 20 mph, becoming northwest after midnight. Gusts up to 30 mph. Chance of rain near 100 percent.

Monday: Mostly cloudy with a chance of rain in the morning, then mostly sunny in the afternoon. Breezy, cooler with highs in the mid 40s. Northwest winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph. Chance of rain 50 percent.

Monday Night: Mostly clear. Lows in the lower 30s. West winds 10 to 15 mph. Gusts up to 30 mph.
