CORVALLIS, Ore. – Among the many things that Oregon State is thankful for is that Raegan Beers wears Orange and Black.
The sophomore post neared her career-best with 27 points and tied it with 16 rebounds on Wednesday in an 88-52 win over UMBC in front of 3,414 at Gill Coliseum.
The effort helped get Scott Rueck his 274th victory at Oregon State, tying him with the legendary Aki Hill for most by a women’s basketball coach at OSU.
Beers’ performance was one of a few standout nights for the Beavs against the Retrievers. Talia von Oelhoffen neared a triple-double with seven points, seven rebounds and eight assists and could have reached the milestone had she needed to play the whole fourth quarter.
Kelsey Rees recorded a new career-high in scoring with 17 points. The Aussie needed just eight shots to get there with a 6-for-8 day from the field and 3-for-4 day from beyond the arc. She also hit both of her free throws.
OSU jumped out to an 11-2 lead with three-pointers by Kelsey Rees and AJ Marotte doing most of the early damage. Donovyn Hunter and Talia von Oelhoffen paced the early run with three assists and Raegan Beers grabbed four rebounds.
Hunter closed the game with 12 points, five assists and a steal. She finished with a plus-minus of +51.
UMBC responded with a 15-1 run as the Beavers went cold from the field, but Oregon State battled back in the second quarter. The Beavs won the period 27-6 with 13 points from Beers serving as the catalyst. The sophomore also had three steals in the frame while von Oelhoffen scored four and dished four more assists.
From there, OSU was able to coast to the victory, outscoring UMBC 25-10 in the third and carrying the large margin of victory through the finish.
Oregon State returns to Gill Coliseum on Wednesday, November 29 for its Beavers Beyond the Classroom game at 11 a.m. against Weber State. Season ticket holders should check their email for information on how to attend.
