Participation enough to field winter sports | News, Sports, Jobs

Date:

Schools within the Warren County School District will have enough players to field teams.

According to district Director of Administrative Support Services Gary Weber, enough students opted to participate in winter sports to ensure programs would continue this year. Now that initial numbers have been established there will be teams, schools have opened registration back up for any additional students who may want to participate.

Some of those numbers were close though.

According to a post on the Youngsville Middle High School website, low participation will create some hurdles for programs this season. Numbers provided by the district show similar-size teams in various sports at other district schools.

“As it stands right now we have met the requirement, but will be on probation in nearly every winter sport for this season based on low numbers,” YMHS Principal Paul Crider said in the post. “Keeping our sports programs is a vital part of a student’s schooling and I would hate to see YMHS lose any more sports.”

This year, Beaty-Warren Middle School will field boys basketball, wrestling and cheer squads; Eisenhower Middle High School will field junior varsity/varsity boys and girls basketball, middle school boys basketball, junior varsity/varsity wrestling, middle school wrestling and middle and varsity cheer teams; Sheffield Area Middle High School will field middle school and varsity/junior varsity basketball, middle school and junior varsity/varsity wrestling and middle school and varsity cheer squads; Warren Area High School will field boys and girls junior varsity/varsity basketball, girls and boys junior varsity/varsity wrestling and varsity cheer squads; Youngsville Middle High School will field boys middle school and junior varsity/varsity basketball, girls junior varsity/varsity basketball, middle school and junior varsity/varsity wrestling and varsity cheer squads.
