Penn State Altoona has solid AMCC week | News, Sports, Jobs

Penn State Altoona seniors Corey Chamberlain and Jake Hillard earned weekly awards from the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference with Chamberlain named Pitcher of the Week and Hillard the Player of the Week.

Chamberlain pitched a complete game for his first collegiate win. The right-hander gave up just one run, five hits, and no walks while recording six strikeouts in seven innings.

Hillard went 3-for-4 at the plate in game one with a double, a home run, three runs scored, two RBI, and a stolen base, then followed that up with a 2-for-4 performance in game two with a double, three RBI, two runs scored, and a walk.

Softball

Penn State Altoona softball swept the AMCC weekly awards, as senior middle infielder Alyssa Fisher was named Player of the Week and sophomore pitcher Josselyn Nau was Pitcher of the Week.

In the Lions’ home sweep of La Roche, Fisher combined to hit 3-for-6 with four runs scored, one double, one RBI, and one stolen base. Against Alfred State, she went 6-for-8 with five RBI, four runs scored, three doubles, two stolen bases, and one triple.

On the week, Nau pitched 14 innings, had a 1.50 earned run average and 0.86 WHIP and struck out nine batters. She compiled a 3-0 record with one save.

Sportsmanship

Five Penn State Altoona winter sport student-athletes were voted to the AMCC Winter All-Sportsmanship team by their peers.

The five student-athletes include Remington Fleck (wrestling), Madison Coleman (swimming), Andrew Miller (swimming), Jessica Burns (basketball) and Mason Kargo (basketball).

Tennis

Penn State Altoona senior Casey Hess was chosen as the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference’s Player of the Week in men’s tennis.

Hess, the Lions’ No. 1 singles and doubles player, had a dominant week for Penn State Altoona, surrendering just two games in a combined nine sets of singles and doubles play against Lycoming College and Pitt-Greensburg.

Hess posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory in singles and prevailed 6-1 in doubles versus Lycoming. Against Pitt-Greensburg, he recorded a pair of 7-0 wins. Hess won both of his singles matches 6-0, 6-0, and he also came away with a pair of 6-0 wins in doubles.

Volleyball

Penn State Altoona freshman opposite hitter Caleb Fries picked up his third AMCC Offensive Player of the Week award in men’s volleyball.

On the week, which included two wins for the Lions, Fries totaled 43 points (5.4 points per set), 34 kills (4.25 kills per set), 10 total blocks (1.25 blocks per set), and three aces (0.38 aces per set) while swinging at a .294 attack percentage.

Through 26 matches this season, the freshman leads the AMCC in kills (316), points (398), and points per set (4.2).
