‘Politicking with Tony King’ premieres Friday on WBTR | Entertainment/Life

Date:

Could Tony King be the next Bill Maher or Trevor Noah?

Everyone starts somewhere and for Baton Rouge standup comedian/former radio show host King, that’s a little show called “Politicking with Tony King.”

“Politicking,” the latest project from Baton Rouge’s Maddgame Entertainment production company, premieres at 10 p.m. Friday on WBTR, Channel 36.

Like Maher’s “Real Time” (HBO) and Noah’s former home, “The Daily Show,” (Comedy Central), King’s new TV hour will be an intersection of humor and politics, according to Maddgame’s content creator Terrance Turner.

“If you’re a fan of shows that kind of mix that brand of humor … that’s the kind of style that you’ll get with this show,” Turner said.

Viewers will experience something fresh and different, Houston native King said.

“They can expect to a see a thoughtful, yet funny show that expresses the real world sensibilities they share,” he said.

Guests will range from elected officials to entertainers. The decision on whom to invite on the show rests mainly with the host, Turner said.

“And then we kind of work from there as far as accommodating that,” Turner added.

Each of “Politicking’s” 13 episodes will be filmed in the same week that it airs, also something new for Maddgame.

“So it’s going to be a quick turnaround. It’s going to be a lot of work in a short amount of time, but we’re doing that in the effort to keep it as current as possible,” said Turner.

Since leaving his morning show slot at Max 94.1 Radio in Baton Rouge, King has taken his observational storytelling style of standup humor around the country. He’ll now sandwich tour dates in between preparation and filming for “Politicking.”

Upcoming standup gigs include Dallas on Saturday, Houston on Saturday, Oct. 28 and Chicago on Thursday, Nov. 30.
