With sisters that came before her, Maya Neverman saw first-hand how being as active and involved as possible can lead to an exciting high school career.
That is why the St. Edmond High School senior has made it a priority to keep herself busy over the past four years.
“I took everyone’s advice to be as involved as you can in high school,” Neverman said. “I’m really happy I did because I’ve had good experiences that I will never forget while also having bad experiences that I have learned a lot from.”
Neverman has been part of the Gael show choir, chamber choir, Gaelic choir, concert choir, speech, Fine Arts Showcase, musical, all-state show choir, honor society and Play Like A Champion while also taking part in the volleyball, basketball, tennis and cheer teams.
“I believe it’s important to be involved because of the connections you make,” she said. “In my experience, I would not have made the connections I made with people in different grades if it hadn’t been for sports and different events.
“Now, I know almost everyone I go to school with and am friends with people in all grades,” she added.
An opportunity to take part in a special event in Pella also allowed Neverman to expand her circle.
“All-state show choir has been maybe my favorite experience I’ve had in high school so far,” she said. “A few of my classmates and I went down to Pella for a three-day camp before a performance for the show choir.
“We spent 10 hours a day with maybe 60 other kids from across the state working on our three song act. I met so many people and made so many memories over that weekend that I will never forget.
“I love performing in general, but performing with 60 talented kids that wanted the good of the group was a whole different experience.”
Neverman plans to attend Iowa State University in Ames in the fall, majoring in elementary education.
