Additionally, transportation officials plan to lift rush hour tolls on Interstate 66 along the Beltway, or from Interstate 495 to Washington, D.C.
High-occupancy vehicle restrictions and Express Lanes tolls will also be lifted on Monday, Dec. 25, and Monday, Jan. 1.
For Virginians traveling to southeast Virginia, construction on the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Expansion Project will not be suspended. Motorists are urged to find an alternate route.
For those traveling this holiday season, state transportation officials said periods of traffic congestion are expected on many northern Virginia roadways. Congestion is most likely to occur from mid-morning to evening on the Friday and Saturday before Christmas, as well as Tuesday through Thursday the following week due.
Some areas prone to congestion are:
- I-95 northbound and southbound in the Fredericksburg area.
- I-395 northbound and southbound in the Arlington area.
- I-77 northbound and southbound near the Big Walker Tunnel.
- Hampton Roads area: Heavier congestion is possible on I-64 due to lane and shoulder closures.
