Women’s Basketball Heads to Puerto Rico Sports Tours Clasico

– Binghamton (2-3) makes its first appearance in an in-season tournament outside of the United States since the 1999 Bahamas Classic. Since Puerto Rico is on Atlantic Standard Time (AST), the games against Appalachian State (3-1) and Furman (3-3) will tip off at 2:30 p.m. local time and 1:30 p.m. EST.

– The Bearcats are coming off a 66-59 loss at Navy on Tuesday night. Redshirt sophomore guard Ella Wanzer netted a team-best 17 points while junior forward Genevieve Coleman and redshirt sophomore guard each added 13 points. Graduate student guard Denai Bowman, meanwhile, chipped in 11 points.

– Wanzer lead the Bearcats and ranks fifth in the America East with 15.2 points game while Coleman is eighth in the conference with 13.5 points per night. Wanzer is also third with a .395 three-point field goal percentage and second with 3.4 three-point field goals per game. Coleman, meanwhile, ranks third with a .559 field goal percentage and leads the America East with a .938 free throw percentage.

– Bowman is No. 14 in the America East with 10.3 points per game, is fifth with a .468 field goal percentage and is tied for ninth with both 2.6 steals and 0.8 blocks per contest. Weltz is tied for third with 4.0 assists per game and is fourth with a 1.2 assist to turnover ratio.

– As a team, the Bearcats rank second in the America East with 68.2 points per game. They are also first with a .410 three-point field goal percentage as well as 8.2 three-point field goals per contest.

– This marks the first time that the Bearcats will face off against either Appalachian State or Furman in women’s basketball.

– Appalachian State defeated Furman 68-63 in the opening round of the Puerto Rico Sports Tours Clasico on Thursday. Faith Austin led three Mountaineer players in double figures with 17 points. The Paladins, meanwhile, were led by Niveya Henley, who scored a game-high 19 points.

– Playing in the Sun Belt Conference, Appalachian State finished 11-20 (6-12) in 2022-23. Furman, meanwhile, competes in the Southern Conference and finished 11-19 (3-11) last year.
Bowman enters the Puerto Rico Sports Tours Clasico with 1,266 career points. She is three points away from tying Cathy Mackin (1994-98) for seventh place all-time in Binghamton program history with 1,269 career points.

– Wanzer currently ranks sixth all time in program history with a .388 three-point field goal percentage. She has made 95 of her 245 attempts from beyond the three-point arc.

– Coleman is one of the most accurate field goal shooters in Binghamton program history. For her career, she is shooting .464 (201-433), which ranks eighth all-time.

– Bowman also ranks No. 15 in Binghamton program history with a career scoring average of 11.5 points per game. Wanzer, meanwhile, is in 17th place with 10.4 points per game. In addition, Bowman’s 299 career assists rank sixth all time in Binghamton program history.
